One of the most common questions people ask about the Catholic faith is, "Why do Catholics baptise babies? Shouldn't they be old enough to choose for themselves?"
It's a thoughtful question, and the answer begins with understanding what Baptism really is. Catholics believe Baptism isn't simply a symbol or public declaration of faith but the first sacrament, a beautiful gift of God's grace that welcomes us into His family and marks the beginning of our journey with Christ.
A Gift From the Very Beginning
Catholics baptise babies because they believe God's love and grace are gifts to be received, not rewards to be earned. Just as parents provide their children with love, care, and everything they need to grow, they also choose to give them the gift of Baptism, trusting that one day their child will freely embrace the faith they have been raised in.
Through Baptism, we are cleansed of original sin, become children of God, and are welcomed into the Church. It is the beginning of a lifelong relationship with Christ, not the end of a person's faith journey.
Is Infant Baptism Biblical?
Yes. Jesus told His disciples:
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" - Matthew 28:19
The Bible also tells us that entire households were baptised after coming to faith, including Lydia's household, the Philippian jailer's family, and the household of Stephanas (Acts 16:15, Acts 16:33, 1 Corinthians 1:16). While Scripture doesn't list the ages of every family member, the early Church understood Baptism to be a gift for the whole family.
St. Peter also proclaimed:
"For the promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him." - Acts 2:39
What About Personal Faith?
Since babies are too young to profess their own faith, their parents and godparents make those promises on their behalf. They promise to raise the child in the Catholic faith, teach them about Jesus, and help them grow in their relationship with God.
As the child grows, they gradually learn about their faith and later have the opportunity to publicly confirm it in the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Why Not Wait Until They're Older?
Catholics see Baptism as the beginning of the Christian life, not something that should be delayed until adulthood. Parents don't wait for a child to choose whether they want food, love, or an education, they lovingly give them those gifts from the very beginning. In the same way, they choose to give their child the gift of God's grace through Baptism, trusting that they will grow into that faith as they mature.

For Catholics, Baptism is one of the greatest gifts a parent can give their child. It marks the start of a lifelong journey with Christ, surrounds them with the love and prayers of the Church, and reminds us that God's grace is offered to each of us from the very beginning of our lives.
