Patron Saint of: The Missions
St. Thérèse of Lisieux is one of the most beloved saints in the Catholic Church. Affectionately known as "The Little Flower," she spent her entire religious life in a Carmelite convent and died at just 24 years old.
She never travelled the world, founded a religious order, or performed famous miracles during her lifetime.
Yet today, she is one of the most influential saints in the Church.
How?
Because she showed us that holiness isn't found only in extraordinary deeds, it can be found in the ordinary moments of everyday life.
A Heart That Longed For God
Thérèse was born in France in 1873 to Saints Louis and Zélie Martin.
From a young age, she had a deep love for God and dreamed of becoming a Carmelite nun. Despite being considered too young, her determination never faded. At just 15 years old, she entered the Carmelite convent in Lisieux, where she would spend the rest of her life.
Although hidden from the world, her love for Christ continued to grow each day.
The Little Way
St. Thérèse is best known for what she called "The Little Way." She believed that becoming a saint wasn't about doing great things that everyone noticed. Instead, it was about doing small things with great love.
A smile to someone who is difficult to love.
Being patient when life is frustrating.
Helping without expecting recognition.
Offering small sacrifices to God.
For Thérèse, every ordinary act could become extraordinary when done out of love for Jesus.
A Simple Path to Holiness
Sometimes we think we need to do something remarkable to grow closer to God but St. Thérèse reminds us that holiness begins in the little things.
She once wrote:
"My vocation is love."
Those simple words became the centre of her entire life. She trusted that every act of kindness, every hidden sacrifice, and every moment of faithfulness mattered in God's eyes.
The Little Flower
Thérèse often compared herself to a small flower in God's garden. Not every flower is called to be a towering tree or a beautiful rose. Each has its own purpose and beauty. In the same way, she believed every person has a unique place in God's plan.
We don't need to compare ourselves to others, we simply need to become the person God created us to be.
What Can We Learn from St. Thérèse?
St. Thérèse teaches us that every day is an opportunity to grow in holiness. You don't have to do extraordinary things to become a saint; rather, it is through the small acts of love we choose each day, a kind word, a hidden sacrifice, a patient response, or a quiet prayer, that we draw closer to God. These simple moments may seem insignificant, but when offered with love, they become beautiful gifts that help us grow in faith and holiness.
Prayer to St. Thérèse
St. Thérèse of Lisieux,
Teach us to love God with childlike trust and to recognise the beauty of ordinary acts done with great love. Help us to follow your Little Way by placing every joy, sacrifice, and challenge into God's hands, and pray that we may grow each day in humility, kindness, faith, and love until we are drawn ever closer to Christ.
