If you’re Catholic, you’ve probably come across things like rosaries, holy water, medals and crucifixes, but have you ever wondered what they actually mean and why Catholics use them? These are known as sacramentals, and they are a beautiful part of Catholic life that can help us remember God and live our faith in our everyday lives.
Sacramentals are not the same as the seven Sacraments, and they don’t work like magic or automatically give us grace. Instead, they are sacred signs, prayers, objects or actions given to us by the Church that help prepare us to receive grace and encourage us to grow closer to God. They can be especially meaningful because they bring reminders of our faith into ordinary moments.
Here are seven sacramentals you may already have in your home or use every day.
1. Holy Water 💧
Holy water is one of the most familiar Catholic sacramentals. It is blessed by a priest and is often found at the entrance of a Catholic church, where we use it to make the Sign of the Cross as we enter.
Using holy water can remind us of our Baptism and our identity as children of God. You can also keep holy water at home and use it when praying, when leaving the house or simply as a small reminder to turn your thoughts towards God throughout the day.
2. The Rosary 📿
The Rosary is much more than a string of beads. It is a prayer that leads us through the life of Jesus while asking Mary to pray with us and for us.
The beads themselves help us keep track of our prayers, but the real purpose of the Rosary is prayer and meditation. As we pray the Hail Marys, Our Fathers and Glory Bes, we reflect on the mysteries of Christ's life, death and Resurrection.
Whether you pray a whole Rosary every day or simply manage a decade when you have a quiet moment, the Rosary can become a beautiful way of keeping Jesus and Mary close to your everyday life.
3. Crucifixes and Crosses ✝️
You’ll find crosses and crucifixes in Catholic churches, homes and sometimes worn as jewellery. A crucifix shows Jesus on the Cross and reminds us of the incredible sacrifice He made for us.
Having a crucifix somewhere in your home can be a simple but powerful reminder of Christ's love, especially during difficult moments. When we look at the Cross, we are reminded that suffering is not the end and that Jesus entered into our suffering Himself.
4. Religious Medals
Many Catholics wear medals of saints, the Virgin Mary or Jesus, and these can be a meaningful way of expressing our faith. Perhaps you have a medal of your patron saint or one of the saints you feel particularly close to.
A medal isn't a lucky charm, and wearing one doesn't mean that we expect the object itself to protect us. Instead, it can remind us to follow the example of the saint represented and ask for their prayers. Every time you notice the medal you're wearing, it can become a little invitation to turn your thoughts back towards God.
5. Scapulars
The Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is another well-known Catholic sacramental. It has a long history connected with the Carmelite tradition and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
For Catholics who receive and wear the Brown Scapular according to the Church's guidance, it can be a reminder of Mary's care and of our desire to follow Christ faithfully. Like other sacramentals, its purpose isn't to be treated as a magical object, but to encourage a deeper life of prayer and devotion.
6. Blessed Candles 🕯️
Candles have always had a beautiful place in Christian worship, and blessed candles can also be used in Catholic homes and prayer.
Lighting a candle while you pray can create a peaceful moment and remind you that Christ is the Light of the World. You might light one while praying the Rosary, asking God for help, praying for someone you love or simply spending a few quiet moments with Him.
The candle itself isn't what makes the prayer powerful. Rather, it can help us create a sacred moment and turn our attention towards God.
7. Blessed Objects
There are many other objects that can be blessed by a priest, including statues, images, medals, rosaries and other items used for devotion. Once blessed, these objects can serve as reminders of God and help us incorporate our faith into our homes and daily routines.
Perhaps you have a little statue of Mary beside your bed, a picture of a favourite saint or a rosary that has been passed down through your family. These things can become meaningful reminders to pray and to keep God at the centre of our lives.
Sacramentals Are Reminders, Not Magic
It's important to remember that sacramentals aren't magical objects. A rosary doesn't replace prayer, a medal doesn't replace faith and holy water isn't a lucky charm. Their purpose is to help us turn our hearts towards God and encourage us to live our faith more deeply.
One of the beautiful things about Catholicism is that our faith isn't something we have to leave behind when we walk out of church. Sacramentals can bring little reminders of God into our homes, our cars, our handbags and our everyday routines.
So the next time you pick up your rosary, make the Sign of the Cross with holy water or notice the crucifix on your wall, take a moment to remember what it represents and let it draw your heart back towards God.
